Description
Take this familiar and fun borax crystals lab to the next level! Perfect for high school Chemistry students, this lab reinforces concepts like supersaturated solutions, solubility curves, and molarity.
NOTE: This lab is also part of my Full Chemistry Curriculum.
Students determine the amount of borax required to create a saturated solution based on a solubility curve. As the solution cools, the borax attaches to a pipe cleaner suspended in the solution to create an impressive crystal!
Chemistry students can also practice solution calculations such as molarity and solution concentration.
Included in this resource:
- Teacher instructions and materials list
- Student worksheet on solute, solvent, solubility curves, molarity calculations, and concentration of solutions
- Answer key to student worksheet
*Note: This activity takes about 30-40 minutes to set up, then must cool overnight.
Required background knowledge:
- Definitions of solute and solvent
- Ability to interpret a solubility graph
- How to calculate moles using molar mass of a compound
- How to calculate molarity of a solution (formula is provided for reference)
- How to calculate the percent mass of a solution (formula is provided for reference)
