Flame Test Lab

$4.25

Description

This high school chemistry flame test lab is a fun, hands-on way to explore emission spectra and atomic structure! Students will use hands-on exploration to observe how the addition of energy causes excited electrons to emit specific colors. An honors page leads students through calculations using the wavelength and frequency of each element’s spectral colors.

This lab is also part of my Full Chemistry Curriculum.

Included in this resource:

  • One paragraph of background information on energy levels, photons, and element emissions
  • Materials list & instructions for making solutions (see preview for necessary materials)
  • Student instructions for testing each solution
  • Data tables for recording flame test observations
  • Post-lab questions for assessing comprehension
  • One page of frequency and wavelength calculations using the visible portion of the electromagnetic spectrum
  • Answer keys

*For a more detailed view of all the pages included in this resource, please see the preview here.

*This lab is a good addition to a discussion of atomic structure, but if you’d like more explanation in the form of presentations, guided notes, and review pages, you may want to purchase the Unit 3- Atomic Structure unit instead. It includes this lab activity, as well.

Topics: Electrons, energy levels, ground state, photon, emission spectra, electromagnetic spectrum, wavelength, frequency
