Description
Explore the electrical conductivity of ionic compounds and covalent compounds with this hands-on lab! Your chemistry students will use predictions, observations, and data analysis to hypothesize and illustrate how the chemical formula of a compound can determine the solubility and conductivity of the compound. An additional discussion page is included for honors students.
This lab is also part of my Full Chemistry Curriculum.
Included in this resource:
- Teacher instructions & materials list (see preview for necessary materials)
- Detailed student instructions for making predictions and assessing the conductivity of solid compounds and solutions
- Data tables and discussion questions for assessing comprehension
- Additional discussion questions to facilitate critical thinking for honors students
- Answer keys
*To see a more detailed view of the pages included in this resource, please check out the preview.

*This lab is a good addition to a discussion of the properties of ionic and covalent compounds, but if you’d like more explanation in the form of presentations, guided notes, and review pages, you may want to purchase the Unit 4- Compounds unit instead. It includes this lab activity, as well.
Topics: ionic compounds, molecular (covalent) compounds, metals v. nonmetals, solubility, electrical conductivity, chemical symbols and formulas
*Knowledge of solubility rules and molarity is not required for this lab.
