Description
This ink chromatography lab is a fun, hands-on way for high school chemistry students to explore molecular polarity and solubility! Students will use measurement, calculation, and data analysis to observe how the polarity of a solvent affects the movement of pigments on paper. The lab is differentiated for honors and on-level students.
This lab is also part of my Full Chemistry Curriculum.
Included in this resource:
- Short polarity demonstration
- Teacher instructions & materials list (see preview for necessary materials)
- Pre-lab comprehension questions
- Detailed student instructions
- Data tables and discussion questions for assessing comprehension
- Answer keys
*For a detailed view of the pages in this resource, please see the preview here.

*This lab is a good addition to a discussion of polarity and intermolecular forces, but if you’d like more explanation in the form of presentations, guided notes, and review pages, you may want to purchase the Unit 5- Bonding unit instead. It includes this lab activity, as well.
Topics: solubility, polarity, retention factor, solvent, solute, molecular geometry
*Knowledge of intermolecular forces is not required for this lab.
