Description
This hands-on Punnett Square activity is a perfect way for students to practice concepts like Mendelian genetics, genotypes v. phenotypes, monohybrid crosses and alleles. Students work in pairs as “parents” to select two alleles for each trait and use those genotypes to create an alien “baby” and draw its phenotype!
Please note: This activity is also part of my Biology Unit 7: Intro to Genetics and the Full-Year Biology Curriculum.
Included in this resource:
- A teacher instruction page with directions for prep & materials (see necessary materials below)
- An Alien Traits reference page showing the alien phenotypes for each genotype
- A student instruction page with chart for recording alleles
- A page of discussion questions for critical thinking and Punnett Square practice
Topics include: alleles, genotype, phenotype, traits, incomplete dominance, codominance, genetic variation in a population, monohybrid Punnett Squares
*Students should have already been introduced to the concept of genotypes, phenotypes, alleles, codominance, incomplete dominance and monohybrid Punnett Squares
